Meet Haripriya, Krithika, Akshaya, Abijoy and Sahana (Grade 8th)
Team Book Drive, Social Innovation Award Winner
Haripriya, Krithika, Akshaya, Abijoy and Sahana, 13-year old students, realized that students had to buy new expensive books each time they wanted to read a new book, without realising that someone in their friend circle had the same book and they could have simply borrowed it.
They began ideating and came up with an idea to build a website where students could list the books they wanted to share by filling a form, and anyone who wanted to borrow a book, could browse through the list of books and request it.
Once they built their website, they went from class to class and told all the students about their new website. They also stuck posters to spread awareness and encourage students to list their books. However, when they did not good response for a week, they conducted a survey to understand the problem. They found out that students were afraid their books might get damaged and hence, did not want to share their books.
Taking this feedback into account, they decided to convert their book sharing platform to book renting platform and charge the students a nominal fee of Rs. 50 for renting a book for a month. Half of this amount was a “Deposit Fee”, which they refunded to the rentee, if the book was returned in a proper condition, and the other half was the “Rent Fee”, which they gave to the owner of the book as an incentive to list more books! And this monetary structure worked! More and more students started listing their books on the website and others started renting from the wide range of books that were now available.
In the past 4 months, students have listed more than 800 books on the website which have been rented over 200 times.
To improve the experience of the students, they now plan to integrate a payment gateway, and a live chat option too!
