How can we prevent the wastage of extra cooked food left in our hostel mess after meals that is currently thrown away?

Meet Kushagra, Nikhil, Saurav, Sidaarth and Varun (Grade 11th)
Team Waste Nought, All Rounded Performance Award Winner

Kushagra, Nikhil, Saurav, Sidaarth and Varun, 16-years old students, noticed that a lot of extra cooked food left after meals in their hostel mess used to be thrown away. When they researched further, they learnt that roughly one third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year gets lost or wasted. (Source) On the other hand, there are many underprivileged people and children who do not even get 2 meals a day.

Idea

Their team decided to take the extra cooked food from their hostel after students ate their meals, and give it to an underprivileged community that needed it. They discussed their idea with their mess coordinator, who was supportive of it. Next, they began their research to find NGOs or non-profit trusts that they could donate the food to. After speaking to over 10 such organizations, that found a trust called Sri Krishnashraya Educational Trust that provides orphans and underprivileged children with shelter, food and education, and accepts donation in the form of food. They contacted the trust who agreed to their proposal, and their initiative started.

Our initiative, Waste Nought, takes the excess, unused food from various places and distributes it to those who are in need of it, through self-sufficient delivery system.

Solution Implemented

The team started packing the extra food from their mess after meals, loaded it into a car and drove down to Sri Krishnashraya Educational Trust to donate the food, who then served it to the children.

The children seemed to really enjoy the food and this was a heartwarming experience for us.

Impact Created

In a period of 3 months, they have reduced the food wastage in their mess by 70%. They have saved more than 800Kg of food and have served over 1600 meals to the students.

They are now expanding to more areas, and have convinced many canteens across the city to give them the extra food. They have also built a big team of volunteers responsible for picking up and dropping the extra food.
